Strong Start Lifts DePaul Past Providence

Peoples, Allen combine for 50 points on the outing
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball took home an 84-72 win over Providence on Wednesday evening at Wintrust Arena behind two 20-point outings from Anaya Peoples and Jorie Allen. The Blue Demons used a 30-point first quarter to jump out to an early lead that they would never relinquish to improve to 11-12 on the season and 4-8 in BIG EAST play.
Peoples led the scoring effort, with a game-high 28 points to go with seven rebounds. Wednesday was Peoples' 11th outing this season recording 20 or more points and the 12th of her career.
Jorie Allen also poured in 22 points, her second game this season with 20-plus points and third of her career. Allen added a team-best eight rebounds.
Graduate forward Brynn Masikewich, making her second start of the season, rounded out the double-figure scorers for DePaul,setting a new career-high with 12 points to go along with six rebounds in 22 minutes of play.
As a team, the Blue Demons outscored the Friars 36-30 in the paint.
Brynn Farrell led Providence (11-13, 5-6 BIG EAST) with 18 points.
How it Happened
An Allen jumper started the scoring for the Blue Demons, but not before the Friars connected on two quick threes to take a 10-4 lead. Masikewich and McErlane hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 10 apiece. The Blue Demons embarked on a 14-3 run over the next two minutes to take a five point lead, 18-13. DePaul ended the first quarter going 9-of-11 from the floor and forced two turnovers during the last minute of play to take a 30-19 lead after 10 minutes.
The Friars opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run, holding DePaul scoreless for three minutes. Michelle Sidor earned the Blue Demons first points of the frame, while a pair of layups from Allen helped keep DePaul in front, 37-31. The Friars were held without a basket for over four minutes of play, but a three from Kate Clarke and a forced turnover helped DePaul get out in front, 42-39, at half.
Anaya Peoples led the team with nine points at the break.
A 6-0 run for DePaul extended the lead, 52-43, halfway through the third. A layup from Allen kept DePaul in front before the Blue Demons ended the quarter scoring five-straight points to take a 63-56 lead into the final frame.
A jumper from Peoples gave DePaul their largest lead of the night, 72-59. Masikewich hit a jumper to keep the lead at 13, while the Blue Demons defense held the Friars to 1-of-7 shooting from the field over a three-minute period. DePaul converted six free throws within the last minute of play to secure the win.
