Cwick makes splash in first-ever game as a Blue Demon
WILMINGTON, N.C. - DePaul softball dropped a pair of games Friday night to open its 2024 campaign, falling to Furman and UNCW. In the season opener, DePaul fell to Furman, 6-3, before dropping a 7-1 decision against UNCW.
DePaul (0-2) saw five newcomers make their DePaul debuts on Friday, with three earning starts. Brooke Cwick, Bibianna Rodriguez and Morgan Rodgers all started both games of the series, while Lydia Ettema and Ava Paganis made appearances in the game at UNCW.
Against Furman, Brooke Johnson got the bats going with a double in the first inning. Alvers, who went 2-for-4 in the game, followed behind with a RBI single. Freshman Brooke Cwick recorded her first career hit, a RBI single, on her first-ever trip to the plate.
Four of the five pitchers on staff saw action, with Katey Pierce earning the start against Furman and Bella Nigey against UNCW. Pierce went 4.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits against the Paladins. Smith came on in relief, going three innings and giving up three runs. Bella Nigey started against the Seahawks, surrendering three runs on five hits over four innings of work. Freshman Lydia Ettema relieved Nigey, making her first appearance as a Blue Demon and recording her first collegiate strikeouts.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1 - Furman 6, DePaul 3
Pierce started off strong, taking down three straight Paladins in the first. Three consecutive hits from Johnson, Alvers and Cwick helped put the Blue Demons up, 2-0, in the bottom of the first. A wild pitch allowed Alvers to cross home and give DePaul a 3-0 lead.Â
Furman capitalized on an error to cut into the lead, 3-1. The Blue Demons threatened in the bottom of the fourth with runners on the corners, but were unable to bring them home. The Paladins hit a home run which put them in front, 6-3.Â
Smith delivered three-straight strikeouts in the top of the sixth, while Addison Talbot delivered a double in the bottom of the frame. The Blue Demons were held scoreless through the rest of the game.
GAME 2 - DePaul 1, UNCW 7
Nigey retired UNCW in order to start, while Addison Talbot hit a center for DePaul's first hit of the game. Gracie Jacobs recorded her first hit of the 2024 campaign in the top of the third, but the Seahawks took a three-run third to control the game.Â
Cosgrove hit a RBI double to bring Johnson across the plate in the seventh inning, but the Blue Demons were unable to get any closer.
