
Softball Splits Regular Season Finale at Seton Hall

Brooke Johnson records 37th career home run to move into third in program history
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - DePaul softball split a regular season finale doubleheader at Seton Hall on Saturday. DePaul (9-38, 4-20 BIG EAST) took the first game, 6-2, while dropping game two, 10-4.
Abbey Pochie earned the start in the circle for game one, throwing the complete game. Pochie (2-3) gave up two runs on five hits and tallied three strikeouts. The sophomore went 2-for-3 at the plate to help herself out, scoring two runs on two hits while also adding two stolen bases and a walk.
Katey Pierce started game two, giving up three runs on two hits. Bella Nigey appeared in relief, throwing 3.0 innings giving up only three hits. Brenna Smith closed out the game, sacrificing five hits and five runs through 3.0 innings of work.
Brooke Johnson went 3-for-4 on the day, including her 11th home run of the season and 37th of her career in the second game of the day. Johnson wraps up her career tied for third in home runs in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 - DePaul 6, Seton Hall 2
Pochie put the first pitch of the game in play with a single up the middle and stole second to get into scoring position. Carly Alvers drew a walk and Johnson followed with a single to right field to score Pochie and send Alvers to third for a 1-0 DePaul lead. Johnson stole second to put both baserunners in scoring position while Ava Paganis drew a walk to load the bases. Riley Pool doubled off of the left field wall to clear the base paths and give DePaul a 4-0 lead. Baylee Cosgrove then hit a sacrifice fly into center field, allowing Pool to come home and extend the lead to 5-0.
Seton Hall (27-21, 14-10 BIG EAST) got on the board in the fourth, scoring two runs off of a single in right field to cut into DePaul's lead, 5-2.
The Blue Demons added an insurance run in the seventh as Pochie drew a one-out walk and a single to right field from Alvers put runners on the corners. Alvers then went to steal second and Pochie was able to score on the throw to second by the catcher to extend the lead, 6-2.
Game 2 - DePaul 6, Seton Hall 10
Seton Hall jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a pair of walks and a home run.
The Blue Demons got the bats going in the third as Ariana Rodriguez drew a walk and Bibianna Rodriguez laid down a bunt single. Pochie reached base on a fielder's choice which moved B. Rodriguez to second. A single to right center from Alvers sent B. Rodriguez home to cut into the lead, 3-1. Johnson earned a walk to load the bases for DePaul while Pool followed up with a single to left field to get the Blue Demons within one as Pochie crossed home, 3-2.
Seton Hall extended their lead in the fifth inning off of a handful of hits, 5-2.
A home run to left field from Brooke Johnson during the fifth got the Blue Demons within two, 5-3. The Blue Demons added another run in the sixth inning. Cosgrove singled to right and moved to second off of a sacrifice bunt from Payton Viles. Lydia Ettema appeared as a pinch hitter and dropped an RBI double to right center to score Cosgrove and get within one, 5-4.
The Pirates added five insurance runs in the sixth inning to push the lead to 10-4.
Pochie drew a leadoff walk and stole second to start off the seventh inning while Johnson followed with a walk of her own. Pool singled to center field to load the bases and an RBI single from Cosgrove sent Pochie and Johnson home to get the Blue Demons within four, 10-6. DePaul would be unable to add any more runs as a flyout ended the game.
