Blue Demons fall in Red Line rivalry
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer fell in a 1-0 heartbreaker to cross-town rival Loyola Chicago on Sunday evening. A 75th-minute score was the difference maker for the Ramblers, enough to edge the Blue Demons at Loyola Soccer Park.
"At the end of the day, you have to score goals to win soccer games," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "I thought we were very solid defensively, and one moment made the difference in the game. Structurally, our defensive formation was strong; we didn't give [Loyola] many opportunities throughout the game, so I was really proud of the team for that. However, we didn't score tonight, and you can only defend for so long. Over the next few days, we really need to focus on creating quality opportunities and capitalizing on the chances we get."
In its 'Pack the Park' night, the Loyola faithful showed out with 1,178 spectators, with DePaul fans donning blue and scarlet spread throughout. The 'Blers (2-0-1) dominated on the offensive side of the ball, controlling 67% of the possession Sunday night.
The Blue Demons (0-2-1) played suffocating defense, allowing just two shots on goal. The difference in the match would be just one of those two attempts finding the net.
DePaul assistant coach Brendan Roth visited his former stomping grounds on Sunday night, as he held the title of assistant coach of the Loyola women's soccer team during the 2023-24 season.
"It was fun to return and see some familiar faces," said assistant coach Brendan Roth. "I know the two teams are familiar with each other as well. It's a fun rivalry with lots of energy, and overall, it was a great game. Our team played really hard tonight, which made for a great return. I'm just looking forward to taking the energy from the Red Line rivalry match and watching the team grow from here."
Loyola started by spraying three quick shots in the first nine minutes of action, with Elena Milam registering her first of two saves just thirty-three seconds into the bout.
The Ramblers continued to apply pressure to the Blue Demon attack, keeping DePaul from attempting a shot in the first half.
Briley Hill opened the second half with a breakaway opportunity in the 51st minute that was halted by Loyola's Allison Deardorff.
DePaul registered its two corner kicks in the 68th and 69th minutes, respectively. Senior striker Susie Soderstrom ripped a left-footed shot attempt in the 69th minute that was also saved by Deardorff. The Blue Demons' final attempt came on a Nahla Dominguez shot that sailed over the goal.
Just two minutes after Loyola received a yellow card, sophomore forward Zoe Hevey netted a ball that drifted just below the outstretched arms of Milam, pushing the score to 1-0 in the 75th minute.
The final 15 minutes were a battle, marked by five fouls and a yellow card for the Blue Demons. Neither team managed another shot, leaving the final score in favor of the Ramblers.
