DePaul drops match 3-0 at Wish Field
CHICAGO – Despite attempting just one fewer shot than Purdue, DePaul women's soccer fell to the Boilermakers in a 3-0 battle at Wish Field, Thursday night. The Blue Demons' attack resulted in their season-high in corner kicks (4), while matching their highest shot attempt total (6).
"I don't believe the scoreline reflected the game," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "It was a very even match, and that's something to hold on to. From an attacking standpoint, it was definitely one of our better games. We generated more chances, earned corner kicks, and found quality opportunities. The goals we conceded were preventable, and we know we could have done better in those moments. It was good to get a lot of subs in the game; they all made a strong case for themselves and had a real impact, which is exactly what you want to see," said coach O'Brien.
In its first of two DePaul University student-Welcome Week matches, the Blue Demons (0-3-1) played aggressively, with 56% of their touches coming on Purdue's half of the field. Purdue (3-1-1) made the most of its possessions, with five of seven shots being on target, including three that found the back of the net.
DePaul opened the match with offensive determination, driving the ball upfield with intent. The Blue Demons earned their first corner kick in the 10th minute, quickly followed by a shot attempt from Nahla Dominguez.
Just six minutes later, Mya Gardner attempted her first shot of the evening, which sailed wide left in the 16th minute.
The Boilermakers responded to the Blue Demons' early intensity with a goal in the 18th minute by Abigail Roy, marking her first finish of the season.
Purdue executed four more corner kicks between the 22nd minute and the 36th minute, with DePaul slowing its intensity. After setting up their final corner of the half, the Boilermakers found the net again, pushing their lead to two in the 36th minute before halftime.
Elena Milam kept Purdue's lead at bay in the first half, recording both of her two saves in the first 45 minutes.
Twelve minutes into the second half, the Boilermakers scored their final goal of the night on a solo effort by Gracie Dunaway, who used her right foot to slice the ball across the goal to the left side of the net.
After a flurry of substitutions for DePaul, four Blue Demons—Shayna da Silva, Tessa Fagerson, Schuyler Riese, and Freya Jupp—put up shot attempts in the final sixteen minutes but were unable to score to close the evening.
Despite the match's aggression, with 21 total fouls, there were no yellow cards, hinting at the two teams' sound competitiveness.
