Blue Demons fall to FGCU Sunday, 4-1
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer fell to Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) in a tough 4-1 match, Sunday afternoon. The Eagles scored three second-half goals to thwart the Blue Demons' comeback hopes.
FGCU (1-3) earned its first victory of the season, with Ashley Labbe and Katharina Oelschlaeger each netting two goals. DePaul (0-4-1) matched FGCU's shot total with 10 apiece, led by Freya Jupp, who scored DePaul's lone goal and took three shots in her 62 minutes off the bench.
The Eagles started strong, firing four shots in the first 21 minutes of play. Oelschlaeger opened the scoring with her first goal, assisted by Erika Zschuppe.
Sophomore midfielder Lea Eisenring responded with DePaul's first shot of the afternoon just seconds later but came up short.
In the 29th minute, Eisenring sent a set piece into the box, where Fabienne Doerig headed it into the goal. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call on Doerig.
DePaul finished the first half with two corner kicks and one shot attempt, with the score remaining 1-0 in favor of FGCU.
FGCU quickly extended its lead with a goal in the 45th minute, stalling DePaul's momentum.
In the 60th minute, DePaul responded with a swift series of passes from Danielle Fjeldsted to Tessa Fagerson, who assisted Freya Jupp on her first goal of the season and DePaul's first of the match.
The Blue Demons went on to concede two more goals in the 60th and 66th minutes.
DePaul attempted five more shots in the second half, with efforts from Eisenring, Susie Soderstrom, and Briley Hill. The Blue Demons surpassed their previous high for shot attempts in a half, tallying eight in the second half.
Despite their determined efforts, DePaul couldn't find the net again and concluded the match with a corner kick in the 85th minute, sealing the final score at 4-1.
