CHICAGO – On June 18, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced that former DePaul coach David Mullins will be named the next Chief Executive Officer of the organization.
Mullins assumes this position after previously serving as the Chief Operating Officer of the ITA. He will spend the next six months as the CEO Designate and will officially take over as the Association's CEO on January 1, 2025.
Mullins began his collegiate coaching career at DePaul University, serving as the associate head coach of the men's tennis team during the 2004-05 season. Under his leadership, the Blue Demons held a 16-9 record and secured two Conference USA victories.
After DePaul, Mullins served as an assistant coach for the Northwestern women's tennis team from 2005 to 2008. During his tenure with the Wildcats, Mullins helped the team earn three Big Ten Conference championships.
In his final eight seasons as a collegiate coach, Mullins was the head coach of the Oklahoma women's tennis team, a position he held until 2016. He led the Sooners to their best season in program history in 2014, finishing in the Top 20 for the first time and reaching as high as No. 14. That same season, Mullins was named the ITA Regional Coach of the Year and was awarded the National Team Sportsmanship Award.
Mullins returned to his native Ireland and became the Director of Sports at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club while serving on the Tennis Ireland Board of Directors and several other committees to help advance the sport of tennis in the country.
Since joining the ITA in 2019, Mullins has led the expansion of the ITA Center for Coach Education, Tennis for America, and the adoption of wheelchair tennis as an official division of play under the ITA.
Before his career in coaching and tennis, Mullins was a student-athlete at Fresno State. He was named an All-American and a 2nd-Team All-WAC honoree with doubles partner Peter Luczak. The duo earned All-American honors and held a final No. 9 national ranking.
A former ATP-ranked singles and doubles player, Mullins' professional tennis career includes appearances at the 1997 Junior Wimbledon and French Open Championships, as well as representing the Irish Davis Cup Team from 1999 to 2004. Davis Cup opponents included Ukraine, Hungary, Greece, Egypt, and Slovenia.
Mullins' son, Liam Mullins, is a current DePaul student and men's soccer forward. Liam is entering his second season with the Blue Demons after logging nearly 900 minutes and scoring three goals during the 2023 campaign.
