Klemp adds sixth career match with 20+ kills
CHICAGO - DePaul volleyball defeated Brown 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19) Friday night, earning their first win of the DePaul / UIC Invite. The Blue Demons improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Bears drop to 2-3.
DePaul was fueled by graduate student Audrey Klemp on offense, who posted 20 kills at a .400 clip. This marks Klemp's first game of 2024 with 20 or more kills, and the sixth of her career. Fellow graduate student Jill Pressly poured in 16 kills of her own along with 15 digs, marking her 44th career double-double.
Both setters also tallied double-doubles, with freshman Amanda Saeger notching 24 assists and 13 digs, while senior Ashley Cudiamat registered 24 assists and 10 digs.
Libero Rachel Krasowski contributed 12 digs, her eighth consecutive double-figure dig match. Sophomore Meghan Scholz recorded five total blocks on the night.
Brown was led by junior Mariia Sidorova, who put up 15 kills and 14 digs.
"Brown pushed us in the areas that most definitely can be a soft spot," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"They had line attackers that at times got very hot. Their serve strategy, spacing multiple servers far beyond the endline almost to the back wall was a serve strategy that we haven't seen yet this year let alone multiple times in the service rotation. Their defense did not let a ball fall. It's rare that we get out defended. But after all that, we found a way to hold serve when it mattered, to fight for 2 or 3 points when it mattered most. Our transition swings got more terminal the longer the match went on. Proud of this team's ability to go from one game plan to another. Let's see how we respond with our third match in three days tomorrow. It will be a measure of competitive identity against a hungry team."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The Blue Demons took set one in decisive fashion, as the Bears opened with three consecutive errors. Three kills from Klemp helped DePaul begin to pull away, and sophomore Meghan Scholz posted three blocks en route to a 25-18 Blue Demon victory.
SET TWO: Scholz opened the set with a kill, but the Bears remained close early, with kills by junior Ella Park and senior Beau Vanderlaan. A kill from outside hitter Yagmur Yavuz pushed DePaul ahead by four, and the Blue Demons never relinquished the lead. Pressly posted three kills late, and a service error sealed the set, 25-22 in favor of DePaul.
SET THREE: Brown jumped out to a quick four-point lead after three attack errors from the Blue Demons. The teams traded kills, tied as late as the 23rd point, but a kill from Brown sophomore Ally Panzloff and a DePaul attack error won the set for the Bears, 25-23.
SET FOUR: DePaul jumped out to a fast 6-2 lead and never looked back, as Pressly and Klemp posted five combined kills in the middle of the set. Kills from senior Aly Kindelberger, Yavuz, and Scholz sealed the match with a 25-19 set win for DePaul.
UP NEXT: DePaul closes the DePaul / UIC invite on Saturday, September 14 against Bowling Green. First serve is set for 5 p.m. The Blue Demons continue their homestand when they host the Chicago Cup from Sept. 19-21 at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
