Musketeers blank DePaul 3-0
CINCINNATI, Ohio. – DePaul women's soccer fell to No. 23 Xavier in its BIG EAST Conference opener, 3-0, Sunday afternoon. The Blue Demons created early chances with three shots in the first nine minutes but couldn't maintain enough possession to keep up with the Musketeers' offensive pressure, being outshot 17 to 4.
"Xavier is a top-25 team that scores a lot of goals," said head coach Michele O'Brien. It's a great first BIG EAST game for us to open with; we learned a lot and had opportunities to get on the board, but we lost discipline in some key moments that cost us goals. We will learn and grow as a team and be ready for a tough match against Butler on Thursday."
After remaining unbeaten in three straight matches, DePaul (2-5-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) dropped its fifth game of the season. The Blue Demons held their own in the first half, conceding just one goal, but gave up a penalty kick in the 53rd minute, followed by a decisive goal in the 78th minute.
Xavier (8-1-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) continues its dominant season, securing its eighth win and maintaining its stretch as the most efficient offense in the league. Junior goalkeeper Maria Galley recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 27th of her career, breaking a school record that had stood since 1993.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons set an aggressive tone early, with Briley Hill attempting a shot in the fifth minute, followed by two quick attempts from senior Susie Soderstrom before the tenth minute. However, DePaul was unable to convert these early chances.
Xavier capitalized in the 14th minute when junior Emma Flick scored, tying a team-high with five goals on assists from McKinley Berry and Olivia Baca.
The Musketeers dominated the next stretch, adding five more attempts between the 15th and 29th minutes, bringing their first-half total to nine.
Junior Nahla Dominguez took three consecutive corner kicks for DePaul in the 32nd and 33rd minutes, but the Blue Demons couldn't generate a shot from these opportunities.
DePaul held Xavier to one goal in the first half, but the momentum shifted early in the second. Graduate captain Beth Smyth managed a left-footed shot in the 48th minute, but it was saved by Galley, marking the final shot DePaul would take in the match.
Xavier extended its lead in the 53rd minute with a penalty kick from senior midfielder Samantha Wiehe, her fourth goal of the season, swinging momentum further in favor of the Musketeers.
DePaul showed resilience in the second half, but despite Xavier being caught offside three times in a ten-minute span, the Musketeers still managed to secure a third goal in the 78th minute, with Olivia Lawson finding the back of the net from a well-placed assist by Reese Slater and Olivia Baca.
The final ten minutes saw both teams trading possession, but DePaul couldn't muster another shot, ending the match with a 3-0 scoreline in favor of No. 23 Xavier.
