Three Blue Demons tally double-figure kills in win
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated the Xavier Musketeers 4-1 (25-23, 26-24,16-25, 25-17) Wednesday afternoon, earning their first BIG EAST win of the year. The Blue Demons improve to 9-4 on the season.
Offensively, DePaul was led by outside hitter Jill Pressly who notched her 55th career double-double, with 17 kills and 12 digs. Middle blocker Aly Kindelberger added 11 kills and three blocks, for her second consecutive game with double-figure kills. Junior Grace Brooker also poured in a career-high 11 kills, along with three blocks.
Setter Amanda Saeger tallied her fifth career double-double, contributing 16 assists and ten digs, while fellow setter Ashley Cudiamat posted 29 assists and three digs.
Libero Rachel Krasowski registered her fifth game of the season with 20 or more digs, totaling 22 on the day.
"We did a nice job adjusting to Anna Taylor down the stretch," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"She is such a great player. We also counted on kills from players other than Jill [Pressly] and Audrey [Klemp]. Those two are going to get their kills but it was so nice to see our middles, specifically Aly [Kindelberger], and opposites, specifically Grace [Brooker], get their double-figure kill match they have been so close to. No doubt it is because our ball control continues to give our setters all their decisions. We look forward to Butler Friday, which is another great opportunity."
Xavier was led by outside hitters Emma Grace and Anna Taylor, who each put up 13 kills for the Musketeers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The first set opened with a kill from Brooker, but the teams traded points early. DePaul went on a 3-0 run in the middle of the set, led by kills from pin hitter Audrey Klemp and Brooker. Four errors from the Musketeers and three Pressly kills earned DePaul the opening set, 25-23.
SET TWO: An ace from Saeger pushed the Blue Demons ahead by three, but two quick kills from Xavier middle blocker Margo Kemp tied the set at eight. The teams were tied as late as 23-23, but kills from Kindelberger and Pressly closed the set, 26-24 in favor of the Blue Demons.
SET THREE: Despite two early kills from Pressly, Xavier jumped in front and retained the lead the rest of the set. The Musketeers registered five service aces, and concluded the set with two consecutive kills from Grace, taking the set 25-16.
SET FOUR: DePaul went on a 3-0 run to open, but Xavier knotted the set at seven after consecutive errors from the Blue Demons. Freshman Abby Cahill put DePaul ahead with two service aces, and Pressly and Brooker each recorded two late kills in a 4-0 run. DePaul won the final set, 25-17.
