DePaul veterans poised for monster season in 2024-25

TOLEDO, Ohio – DePaul began its fall tournament slate with a trip to Toledo, Ohio for the Rocket Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27.

Coming off an All-BIG EAST first team honor a season ago, Hannah Smith picked up right where she left off with a doubles victory and two dominating singles wins. Senior Eleanor Nobbs, a second team member on the ALL-BIG EAST roster during the 2023-24 campaign, followed suit, winning each singles set by no less than four points.

Doubles play got underway at 9:00 a.m. CT on the UT Varsity Courts against host Toledo. The senior duo of Eleanor Nobbs and Eva Goncharov outlasted Rondon/Scholten, claiming a 6-4 victory. During the 2023-24 campaign, the pair held an 11-4 record during dual season action and a 6-1 mark while on tour. Smith and sophomore transfer, Roberta Sechi collected a win in a thrilling 7-6 (1) match.

Singles play was split into an A and B format. The players in both groups played the same teams, but individuals in group A would begin before those in group B.

The Blue Demons kicked off Group A with a matchup versus Youngstown State at 10:00 a.m CT. Again, Smith's play was a highlight defeating Lorena Cedeno 6-2, 6-1. Nobbs matched Smith's performance, overwhelming Lili Minich by the same score.

Group B began at 12:30 p.m. CT with freshman Isabella Gibson tallying her first collegiate victory to the tune of a 6-4, 7-5 advantage over the Penguin's Lydia Foster.

Following the contest, the Blue Demons moved their sights onto Toledo for the second and final singles match of the day with first serve at 1:00 p.m. CT. Smith secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory, while Nobbs won in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2 over Gaby Rondon.

The second slate of singles action began at 2:30 p.m. CT. Sophomore Sasha Stula battled back from a 4-6 deficit in set one to take sets two and three 7-6 (5), 10-8, respectively.

Sophomore Helin Alvarez came away triumphant, marking her first career win as a Blue Demon. After edging the Rocket's Annika Munson in set one, 6-4, Alvarez dropped the second set, 4-6. The Venezuelan native showed great determination, rebounding to take the tie breaker 10-2.
