Johnson-Matthews, Allen pace DePaul to third-straight victory
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball outlasted Providence 62-56 on Sunday afternoon to win its third-straight game and improve to 9-9 on the season and 4-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Blue Demons were tested often, weathering an early 10-0 run from the Friars and a second quarter scoring drought, but found a way to pick up the victory behind stout defense and timely contributions throughout the lineup.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews finished with 21 points behind five three-point field goals to lead DePaul. The junior guard finished with 20 or more points for the third-consecutive outing and fifth time this season while extending her double-figure streak to 10 games.
Jorie Allen totaled 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, to extend her streak of 10 or more points to 18 games. She scored 13 of her points from the charity stripe which marked the most free throws made by a Blue Demon since Anna Martin sank 13 in a game in January of 2012. The graduate forward did a little bit of everything with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
On the glass, junior forward Meg Newman grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for her fourth game this season in double digits.
The Blue Demons totaled 14 assists on 16 field goals, assisting on 87-percent of their baskets. Sophomore guard Sumer Lee registered a game-high six helpers.
Marta Morales led Providence with 18 points while Grace Efosa posted 17.
How It Happened
A swift two-point basket by Lee gave way for an early 10-0 Friar run. The Blue Demons responded with a 14-1 scoring run of their own thanks to a trio of three pointers from Taylor Johnson-Matthews. Both teams traded field goals over the final four minutes of the first quarter with DePaul leading 22-17 after one.
Ellery Minch opened DePaul's second-quarter attack with a 25-footer, 25-20. The Blue Demons were held without a point for a five-minute stretch as Providence reclaimed the lead with nine points unanswered. Jorie Allen broke the drought with a finish inside, closing the first half trailing by two, 31-29.
The Blue Demons opened the second half with baskets by Johnson-Matthews and Allen to reclaim the lead, 33-31. A Shakara McCline three pointer gave DePaul its largest lead of the game amidst a 7-0 run. Providence clawed back, scoring six unanswered to cut the Blue Demons' lead to one, 40-39. The Scarlet and Blue held the Friars without a field goal for nearly five minutes, ahead 46-40 going into the fourth quarter.
DePaul missed its first eight field goal attempts of the quarter. McCline sank back-to-back two-point baskets to regain momentum for the Blue Demons, 50-46. The Friars and Blue Demons went shot-for-shot before Providence closed the gap to two, 55-53. Upon entering the bonus, DePaul sank seven free throws to put a seal on the Sunday afternoon battle, 62 to 56 in favor of the Blue Demons.
