
Smith, Goncharov Unstoppable at FIU Invitational

The tandem finishes without a doubles loss on the weekend
MIAMI – Junior Hannah Smith and senior Eva Goncharov led the way for the Blue Demons on the final day of play at the FIU Invitational, Sunday, January 12.
The PayCargo Tennis Center was the site for the third day of matches. With doubles competition beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT, Goncharov and Smith were slated as the second contest of the day when they battled Dana Baidaulet/Anja Draskovic (FIU). The Blue Demon duo emerged triumphant, holding the narrow, 7-5 edge.
In singles action, Smith fell in a three-set thriller against Lara Smejkal (FAU). Smith fought back to even the match after a 6-4 victory in set two. The third frame displayed Smith's perseverance, although the junior lost in a tight, 10-8 tiebraking affair.
Gibson claimed a win after squaring off with Gian Octa (MIZ), 6-4, 6-3. The freshman ended the weekend 2-1, marking a respectable, 6-4 record during the 2024-25 tournament slate. Gibson aims to continue the momentum heading into the dual season beginning Saturday, January 18.
For the second-consecutive day, Goncharov earned victories in both singles and doubles matches. After winning doubles with Smith, the Canadian bested Hartel (MIZ), 6-4, 6-2 in singles.
