Blue Demons record first regular-season conference win in nearly two years
WASHINGTON D.C. – DePaul men's basketball closed out a Friday night road game for its first conference game of the season with a 73-68 victory against Georgetown. It marked DePaul's first regular-season BIG EAST win since Jan. 18, 2023 and first road conference win since Feb. 24, 2022.
It was a team effort for DePaul as seven of the eight players who saw action scored a field goal, and three reached double-digits. CJ Gunn had a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while also adding five rebounds and two steals. Layden Blocker had 14 points, followed by 12 from NJ Benson. Benson also tallied seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DePaul (10-9, 1-7 BIG EAST) opened the first half strong with an 15-5 lead that included an 11-0 run, while holding Georgetown (12-6, 3-4 BIG EAST) scoreless for nearly five minutes. Still up 21-13, D'Amico hit a layup out of a DePaul timeout keeping the Blue Demons ahead 10. After Georgetown hit back-to-back layups, Blocker quieted the crowd with seven unanswered points, including a pair of three-pointers, for a 39-22 lead. Georgetown ended the half on back-to-back three-point plays.
After the Hoyas opened the second period with a basket, DePaul hit four-consecutive field goals which included Benson's first career three-pointer. With the Blue Demons up 53-37, Georgetown started to chip away at the lead pulling within 10. Benson continued to find offensive answers, grabbing a huge offensive rebound and finishing with a dunk at the rim. With under 12 minutes left to play, Georgetown's defense held DePaul scoreless for a three minute drought, seeing the Blue Demons lead move to five. With a little over two minutes left to play, Malik Mack hit a three-pointer for Georgetown making it a 65-63 game. Troy D'Amico came up big with a steal and three-pointer with a minute left in game action. DePaul made critical free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
