Blue Demons tally victory in first home contest of dual play

CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis beat cross-town foe, UIC 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at XS Tennis Village.

The triumph marked the first win of the 2025 dual season for the Scarlet and Blue. In doubles competition, the Blue Demons were boosted early by performances from freshman Eleanor Cochran and sophomore Sasha Stula. The tandem quickly defeated Maria Halbersztadt/Dongke Liu (UIC), 6-1 in slot three.

The No. 1 doubles pair, senior Eva Goncharov and junior Hannah Smith clinched the doubles point 6-3, giving DePaul the early lead.

Singles action followed with senior Eleanor Nobbs dominating on court two, 6-2, 6-2.

Stula, continuing her hot start from doubles play, took a 6-4 advantage into the second set. The Gifu, Japan native would not relinquish the lead, winning the match 6-4, 6-3. DePaul held a 3-0 margin before Liu bested freshman Isabella Gibson on court five.

The final singles match of the afternoon featured Goncharov against the Flames' Halbersztadt. The DePaul veteran began the contest with swift play, jumping out to a 6-2 edge after set one. A back-and-forth second set saw Goncharov fall behind 2-3 but resiliently battled, tallying a straight-set sweep, 6-2, 6-4 to secure the first win on the young season.

After the match, head coach Marisa Arce attributed the atmosphere to the Blue Demon victory.

"I thought it was a great first home match. The energy was great and having so many people [at XS Tennis Village] created an amazing environment for the players. I thought from the beginning to the end we looked like we had belief and were having fun which helped us get the job done."
