Blue Demons square off against Georgetown and George Washington in weekend matches
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis takes a trip to the nation's capital for a pair of matches this weekend. The Blue Demons battle Georgetown to begin BIG EAST play on Friday, January 31. First serve is at 4:15 p.m. CT from Woodmont Country Club. Following the match, DePaul makes a two-mile jump over to George Washington, squaring off with the Revolutionaries on Saturday, February 1. Coverage from the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (SETLC) is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. CT.
The Scarlet and Blue are 10-1 all-time against Georgetown marking the second-highest winning percentage against BIG EAST opponents. The two programs faced one another last season with DePaul besting the Hoyas, 6-1 at XS Tennis Village. Saturday is the first time the Blue Demons play George Washington in school history. Omaha is the only other school DePaul battles for the first time in program history this season, matching up in mid-February.
Friday's contest is the first BIG EAST match the Scarlet and Blue have played in January during head coach Marisa Arce's tenure.
"We're all fired up to have a conference match so early on and against a top team in this league," said Arce. "We're expecting a battle, and looking to improve from our previous matches."
DePaul (1-2) enters competition against Georgetown on the heels of a win in its home opener versus UIC and a road loss to Northwestern. On Saturday, January 25 while facing the Flames, DePaul moved out to an early lead, gaining the doubles point. In singles, returners Eleanor Nobbs, Sasha Stula and Eva Goncharov collected wins on courts two through four, respectively, sealing the match victory for the Blue Demons. Facing Northwestern the following day, the Blue Demons fell 0-4 in the match, but the tandem of Stula and freshman Eleanor Cochran tallied a 6-1 victory in the third doubles slot.
Georgetown (1-0) enters action after a 5-2 triumph over Howard in its home opener. In 2024, the Hoyas were held to an 8-13 clip with a 4-3 BIG EAST record in dual play. Sophomore Emily Novikov returns to the Hoyas after posting an 11-4 record in dual singles competition last season. Head coach Freddy Mesmer is in his fourth season leading both the men's and women's tennis programs.
George Washington (1-0) comes into play after a dominant 7-0 road victory against fellow Atlantic 10 opponent, George Mason. The Revolutionaries face Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday before their match with the Blue Demons. A year ago, the Revolutionaries finished with a 6-15 record during the dual campaign. George Rodriguez is in his third season as the head coach with a two-year stint at Fresno Pacific before coming to Washington D.C. While with Fresno Pacific, Rodriguez coached the team to a 16-10 record, finishing third in the PacWest in 2022.
