Blue Demon duo combines for 42 points in the victory
QUEENS, N.Y. – A 14-2 fourth quarter run propelled DePaul to a 67-60 victory over St. John's on Thursday night inside Carnesecca Arena. A national television audience was treated to a display or resilience and composure from the Blue Demons who trailed by seven headed into the final period.
The tandem of Taylor Johnson-Matthews and Jorie Allen combined for 42 of DePaul's points, including 23 of 26 points in the final 10 minutes.
Johnson-Matthews collected her ninth-straight game with 10+ points finishing with 23 on the evening on 50-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard grabbed a career-high four steals in the outing including two in the final Red Storm possessions to seal the game.
Allen shot 66-percent from the field and totaled 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half, to extend her double-figure scoring streak to 17 games which is fifth-longest in program history. She added a game-high 6 assists.
Junior forward Meg Newman posted eight points and 10 rebounds for her third double-digit rebounding effort of the season.
As a team, the Blue Demons were extremely efficient from the field, shooting a season-high 61-percent. It's DePaul's highest field-goal percentage since November 9, 2021 in a 67-percent clip against Texas Southern.
DePaul (8-9, 3-1 BIG EAST) outrebounded the Red Storm 25-21 and moved to 6-1 this season when grabbing more boards than its opponent.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led three Johnnies in double figures with 15 points.
How It Happened
The game started with a frenetic pace as the sides traded buckets with St. John's leading 9-6 at the first media timeout. Angelina Smith's drive to the basket tied the game at 13 before the Red Storm claimed a 15-13 advantage as time expired in the opening quarter.
Back-to-back St. John's triples widened the lead to its largest of the game, 25-18, midway through the second. The Blue Demons hit five of their next six field goals to trim the deficit down to one, but the Red Storm closed the half with a 7-2 run to take a 34-28 edge into the locker room.
The Blue Demons came out of halftime with renewed energy, hitting their first three attempts from the floor to trail by just one with three minutes gone by in the third. St. John's strung together a 6-0 run, forcing five turnovers in a five-minute stretch to jump in front 48-39. DePaul faced a 48-41 deficit heading into the final quarter.
Much like the third quarter, the Blue Demons began the fourth with three-straight makes from the field to force an early Red Storm timeout. DePaul took its first lead since 2-0 with an Allen and-one with 7:39 remaining in the game. A 14-2 DePaul run capped by a Johnson-Matthews bucket to beat the shot clock put the Blue Demons in front for good.
