Set-piece finishes decide road contest at No. 16 Georgetown
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite not conceding from open play, DePaul women's soccer was downed by No. 16 Georgetown in a 2-0 decision Saturday evening at Shaw Field.
"Although conceding two goals on corner kicks in controllable moments is deflating, I'm still proud of our organization and commitment to the game plan to keep them off the scoresheet from open play," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "Facing a top team like Georgetown gives us a clear picture of where we can tighten things up, and we'll look to build on that heading into another tough matchup at Seton Hall."
With the result, the Blue Demons (3-9-1, 0-4-1 BIG EAST) remain in search of their first league win but showed encouraging signs of progress in Washington, D.C. DePaul's defensive shape frustrated Georgetown for much of the night, with both Hoya goals coming from set-piece situations rather than open play.
Georgetown (10-2-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) maintained its perfect conference record and secured its 19th straight season with double-digit wins, a streak dating back to 2006. The matchup also marked the first time since 2021 that the Blue Demons allowed Georgetown to score multiple goals.
How it Happened
The Hoyas struck first in the ninth minute when sustained corner-kick pressure led to a close-range finish from Henley Tippins off a service from Shay Montgomery and Natalie Means. DePaul settled in and frustrated Georgetown for the remainder of the half, highlighted by Katelyn Jamie's near-equalizer in the 42nd minute that sailed narrowly high.
Georgetown doubled its advantage early in the second half, again converting from a corner sequence as Maja Lardner finished off a recycled ball in the 47th minute with assists credited to Mary Cochran and Lizzie Heller. Goalkeeper Maddie Iro recorded six saves on the evening, including several key stops in the closing stages to keep the scoreline at 2-0.
Match Notes
DePaul closes its road-stretch at Seton Hall, Wednesday, Oct. 15, in South Orange, N.J. First touch is set for 5 p.m. CT.
