Blue Demons Host Detroit Mercy Sunday

DePaul ends six-game homestand to open the season
CHICAGO – DePaul men's basketball concludes it season-opening homestand, Sunday, Nov. 23 as the Blue Demons play host to Detroit Mercy. Tip is set for 5 p.m. from Wintrust Arena on ESPN+ with Evan Stockton and Jerel McNeal on the call. Zach Zaidman and Dave Corzine have the radio call on Sirius XM and the DePaul Blue Demons App.
LAST TIME OUT
DePaul (3-2) looked to be back on track with a start-to-finish victory against Gardner-Webb, Tuesday. The 93-62 victory marked DePaul's second 30+ win of the season. The Blue Demons offense shone, tying a Wintrust Arena record 29 assists – which also tied the most under a team led by Chris Holtmann. DePaul is assisting on over 70 percent of its made field goals this season, a mark that ranks fourth nationally. Four players average multiple assists per game, led by Layden Blocker's 4.00 average and Brandon Maclin's 3.4.
The last two games have marked an emergence for several young players in DePaul's lineup, including Fabián Flores and Kruz McClure. Flores made his first career start Tuesday, notching 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks in just 12 minutes. McClure, who is shooting 42.9 percent from three this season, has averaged 12.0 points and 3.5 assists in his last two outings.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY
Detroit Mercy (1-5) is coming off a Friday night loss to #17 Michigan State where the Titans returned to head coach Mark Montgomery's alma mater. Senior Orlando Lovejoy led Detroit Mercy with 14 points, and is the Titans leading scorer this season with 13.8 points per game and averages 4.0 assists. Detroit relies on its bench, ranking top-75 nationwide with an average of 32.67 points per game from reserves.
The Titans return all five starters from a year ago where the program went 8-24 overall. Lovejoy was the leading scorer in the Horizon League a year ago and was joined by a six member freshman class and three newcomers.
THE SERIES
DePaul leads the all-time series, 29-8, including a 19-1 advantage at home. The two teams last faced off Nov. 28, 2009 where the Blue Demons came away with a 68-66 overtime victory. DePaul has wins in the last four meetings in the series, with Detroit Mercy's lasts win Feb. 12, 1994.
UP NEXT
DePaul heads to the Emerald Coast Classic, Nov. 28-29, in Destin, Fla. for its first taste of competition away from Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons face off against Georgia Tech Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday contest against either Drake or LSU. Friday's game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
