Jorie Allen sets single-season free throw record in 82-72 loss
MILWAUKEE – In a blow for blow battle between longtime rivals, DePaul women's basketball hung tough but an untimely fourth quarter scoring drought did them in in an 82-72 loss to Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
Â
The Blue Demons led by one heading into the final quarter before going nearly eight minutes without a field goal in the final stanza during which the Golden Eagles took the lead for good.
Â
With the loss, DePaul fell to 12-16 on the season and 7-8 in BIG EAST action while Marquette improved to 17-8 overall and 9-5 in league games.
Â
Graduate forward Jorie Allen posted 22 points, her 14th outing of 20 or more points this season, on 66-percent shooting from the field. She added four rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks while extending her double-figure streak to 28 games. With her sixth free-throw of the game, Allen broke the DePaul single-season record (185) previously owned by Diana Vines in the 1987-88 season. Â
Â
Kate Clarke finished with 14 points for her fourth game in double-digits this season while sophomore guard Shakara McCline totaled 13 points in the first half.
Â
The Blue Demons dominated second-chance points 17-4 behind 14 offensive rebounds. Haley Walker grabbed a team-best eight rebounds off the bench.
Â
Marquette had three players finish in double figures with Skylar Forbes recording a game-high 26 points.
Â
How It Happened
It was a defensive battle in the first three minutes as the two sides accounted for just one made field goal before DePaul opened a 6-0 run behind made baskets from three different players. McCline hit three-straight buckets as the Blue Demons extended its advantage to 17-11 before the Golden Eagles hit a pair of free throws before the quarter expired.
Â
DePaul connected on six of its first eight shot attempts in second quarter to go in front 31-23 halfway through the period. The Golden Eagles responded with an 8-0 run in a hurry to tie the ballgame. Marquette shot 56-percent from the field in the second stanza and held a 39-36 edge at the half.
Â
An offensive rebound from Walker led to an inside finish from Sumer Lee for DePaul to tie the score at 53 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the third quarter. A pair of free throws from Allen were the last points of the period for the Blue Demons as the visitors led 59-58 headed to the fourth quarter.
Â
The Golden Eagles rattled off a 6-0 run in a minute's time to claim a 68-64 advantage and force a DePaul timeout with 6:44 remaining in regulation. The Blue Demons went without a field goal until the 1:15 mark when Clarke drove through the paint for a layup to make it a 10-point game. Marquette went 10-for-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to claim the win and the season sweep.
