Women’s tennis faces Omaha and Creighton this weekend
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis returns to the Midwest for weekend contests against Omaha and Creighton. The Scarlet and Blue square off with the Mavericks on Friday, Feb. 21. Coverage from the Miracle Hill Tennis Center at 5 p.m. CT in Omaha, Nebraska. On Saturday, the Blue Demons make the fifteen-minute drive to take on the Bluejays at 3 p.m. CT from the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
DePaul won its first-ever matchup versus Omaha in 2023. In the match, Eleanor Nobbs and Hannah Smith each registered singles victories, leading to a 6-1 team win. The Blue Demons are 8-1 all-time against Creighton, with their last win coming a season ago. In singles, Sasha Stula dominated, 6-1, 6-0 on court six, helping DePaul secure a 4-3 victory at XS Tennis Village.
Facing another BIG EAST foe this weekend gives DePaul an opportunity to build momentum heading into conference play. Head coach Marisa Arce highlighted the team's progress early in the season.
"We've seen tremendous growth the last few weeks competing against some of the best teams in the country. It's all about conference season, and we're excited to build on that growth against a BIG EAST opponent," said Arce.
DePaul (4-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) enters play after dropping both matches last week. No. 1 doubles Eva Goncharov and Smith shined bright for the Blue Demons, defeating two ranked doubles teams. The pair opened action on Friday with a 6-3 win over Purdue's No. 59 Tara Katarina Milic and Carmen Gallardo Guevara on court one. Goncharov and Smith topped their performance against the Boilermakers, beating Tulsa's eighteenth-ranked Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings, 6-3. The victories propelled the duo to No. 49 in the ITA rankings, making them the first-ranked Blue Demon doubles team since Smith and Greta Carbone reached No. 57 in 2024. The tandem sits at 5-2 in dual action this season.
Omaha (3-5) begins competition following a 5-2 triumph over Nebraska last weekend snapping a four-match losing streak. Adam Summit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Mavericks. Summit led the Mavericks to a 7-2 record at home last season. In 2019, Summit coached Omaha to its first Summit League Championship appearance in program history.
Creighton (6-2) won its last two matches against Lindenwood and Western Illinois. Freshmen Phillippa Roy and Alem Cote are undefeated in singles play this season, with a combined 13-0 record. Tom Lilly, in his 28th season as head coach, led the Bluejays to a 14-7 record in 2024.
