Isaiah Rivrea drops 18 points and eight rebounds
OMAHA, NEB. – After several early lead changes and ties, DePaul men's basketball was ultimately held off by the home, Creighton Bluejays, Wednesday night, 75-65. The Blue Demons effort was led by an 18-point, eight rebound performance by Isaiah Rivera. Rivera was joined in double digits by CJ Gunn and Layden Blocker with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth effort to open the contest as DePaul (11-18, 2-16 BIG EAST) took an 8-7 lead going into the first media timeout off a three-pointer from Troy D'Amico. The Blue Demons extended their lead to 22-18 off a 7-0 run that included four-straight made field goals. Creighton bested DePaul's run with 12 unanswered points of its own, taking a nine-point lead. DePaul's defense was able to hold Creighton off the scoreboard to end the half and notch a layup from Rivera and three by David Thomas to make it a four-point game at halftime.
Creighton (20-8, 13-4 BIG EAST) opened the second half and quickly took the first double-digit lead of the game, 44-34, forcing a DePaul timeout. D'Amico found an answer out of the timeout, however, DePaul was unable to get a three to fall until Rivera knocked one in six minutes into the period. Another basket from Rivera brought DePaul within five, 50-45, before Creighton took advantage of several second chance opportunities. The Bluejays eventually went on a 15-0 run that pulled them out of reach from DePaul.
