Blue Demons win doubles point for 10th time in last 11 matches
CHICAGO – Despite a 3-0 advantage to start the match, DePaul women's tennis couldn't seal the deal in a 4-3 setback against St. John's on Friday afternoon at XS Tennis Village.
DePaul (9-6, 4-1) won the doubles point and claimed the first two singles matches to maintain an early edge but dropped the ensuing four matches including a trio in three sets to halt their five-match win streak.
The Blue Demons got off to a fast start, claiming the doubles point for the 10th time in the last 11 matches. The tandem of Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula improved to 11-3 at No. 3 this season with a decisive 6-3 win while No. 54-ranked pair of Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith took down the Red Storm's Babikova/Gomez 6-4 at No. 1. Goncharov and Smith have won nine in a row and are 10-2 during dual season.
In singles action, Smith extended her win streak to three matches with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Victoria Papadopoulou to put the Blue Demons in front 2-0.
Goncharov followed suit with a straight-set triumph at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4, to push DePaul's lead to 3-0. The senior claimed her fifth-consecutive match and improved to 9-3 on the dual campaign.
St. John's earned their first match of the day on court six with Alicia Gomez picking up a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Eleanor Cochran to make it 3-1 in favor of the Blue Demons.
The Red Storm came within a point after Eleanor Nobbs retired on court two in the third set and evened the match 3-3 at No. 5 with Roberta Sechi falling 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 to Sandra Dzhambazov.
In the deciding match on court two, Stula held a 4-2 advantage in the third set but couldn't clinch the match, falling in a closely contested contest 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to Noemi Babikova.
