Blue Demons Come Up Short Against South Florida

CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis fell in a back-and-forth affair Saturday afternoon at XS Tennis Village, dropping a 4-3 effort to South Florida.  
 
The Blue Demons started strong, winning the doubles point for the 11th time in the last 12 matches. In dismantling fashion, Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula claimed court two 6-1 over USF's Niroshan and Senli to improve to 12-3 this spring with their fifth-straight win. At No. 1, Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith, ranked 54th nationally, continued their run of dominance, winning their 10th-consecutive match in a 6-2 victory over Leeson and Marcon.
 
South Florida (6-12) responded with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 as Cochran fell to Josefine Falster to even the match score 1-1. The Bulls took a 2-1 advantage with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 as Melisa Senli outlasted DePaul's Smith.
 
The Bulls widened their lead on the match to 3-2 with a win on No. 5, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 as Kelly Vargas got the best of Roberta Sechi.
 
DePaul (9-7) notched its first singles win of the day with Goncharov prevailing at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6 to narrow the deficit 3-2. The senior improved to 10-3 on the dual campaign and has won her last six matches.
 
Isabella Gibson evened the match with a come from behind victory on court four, taking down Margherita Marcon 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
 
Down to the final match for the second-straight day, Stula gave it all she had before falling in tiebreak fashion 6-3, 6-7, 6-7 at No. 2 to South Florida's Charlotte Ruud.
 
Up Next
The Blue Demons will take the week off from competition before visiting four-time reigning BIG EAST Champions Xavier on Saturday, March 29.
