Blue Demons visit Musketeers for spring break match
CHICAGO – The Scarlet and Blue head to Cincinnati for a battle with Xavier on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. CT from the Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility. Live scoring results are available for fans here.
DePaul and Xavier last squared off in the 2024 BIG EAST Championship match, with the Blue Demons narrowly falling 2-4. In the match, Hannah Smith contributed to the team's top doubles duo, winning 6-4. This time around, Smith and Eva Goncharov, ranked 54th in the nation, look to continue their success with an 11-2 record in dual play, including 10 straight victories.
DePaul (9-7 4-1 BIG EAST) takes the court against Xavier after dropping its last two matches despite quick starts. No. 3 doubles tandem Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula tallied a 6-3 triumph before Goncharov and Smith secured the doubles point on court one versus St. John's on Friday, March 21. The tandems hold a combined record of 23-5 since the start of the dual action. In singles, Smith won 6-0, 6-2 in slot one, while Goncharov collected a 6-2, 6-4 straight advantage over Charlotta Russ. The Johnnies stormed back, taking four consecutive courts to clinch the match.
The Blue Demons found themselves up early against South Florida on Saturday, March 22, courtesy of a Cochran and Stula victory on court two, their first of the season in the spot. USF secured courts six, one and five, moving ahead 3-1 before Goncharov won on singles court three and Isabella Gibson in slot five to even the score. Stula gained an early lead in the final tiebraking set with a 6-3 advantage after set one. The sophomore dropped the last two sets by the smallest of margins, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (2-7), resulting in a 3-4 DePaul defeat.
Xavier (7-8, 1-1 BIG EAST) is the four-time defending conference champion but holds a 2-7 road record this season. The Musketeers found their footing recently with back-to-back shutout wins over Georgetown and Dayton. Emily Flowers paces the team with a 10-3 mark overall and a 9-2 record on the court four in singles. In doubles, Abby Nugent and Clara Owen are 37th in the ITA rankings. Head coach Doug Matthews led Xavier to all five of its NCAA tournament berths since taking over at the helm in 2015.
