Beaupre and Cosgrove each log two hits in victory
CHICAGO – DePaul softball walked off Valparaiso in eight innings, 4-3, Wednesday evening. The Blue Demons remain a perfect 21-0 against the Beacons at home, and emerge victorious in their lone Wednesday contest of the season.
Junior Bella Nigey got the start in the circle, her ninth this season, and fifth in the month of March. Nigey went six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, and notching one strikeout. Hannah Messer entered in relief after a strong outing as the starter Tuesday evening, finishing the final two frames with one run on two hits and one strikeout.
Brooke Cwick saw her third start at first base for the Blue Demons, and freshman Chelsea Parker earned her second collegiate start as the designated player.
Graduate student Kelly Beaupre and senior Baylee Cosgrove both registered multi-hit games, their fourth and fifth this season, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons were quickly on the board as Marissa Jackson was walked, and Azalya Lopez brought her around the bags with an RBI double.
Nigey saw a three-pitch second frame and retired the side in order in the third.
Bibianna Rodriguez was then walked to lead off the third frame for the Blue Demons, advanced to second after a bunt from Morgan Rogers, and Baylee Cosgrove brought her home with an RBI single. Despite loading the bases, DePaul could not capitalize, and concluded the inning with just one run.
Nigey again retired the side in order in the fourth. Freshman Zoe Levine later logged a single, and after pinch runner Alexis Houge stole second, Rodriguez tallied an RBI double to give DePaul their first lead of the afternoon.
Despite getting a runner to third, the DePaul defense held strong in the fifth frame, allowing just one hit and no runs, but a solo home run from Mack Gallagher knotted the game once again at two runs apiece.
DePaul loaded the bases for a second time, but no additional runs would score, and the contest went to extra innings.
The Beacons drove home a run in the eighth after a walk, sacrifice bunt, intentional walk, and a single from Kaia Garnica. Staring down the final out, DePaul freshman Addi Burdick was walked, and Morgan Rogers laced a single to right field. The winning pair of runs would come across after Baylee Cosgrove put the ball in play, with pinch runner Bibianna Rodriguez making it home for the DePaul victory upon a Valparaiso error at second base.
