Blue Demons extend win streak to five
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis tamed the Butler Bulldogs, winning 7-0 in the Natalie Matko Jackson Memorial Match on Saturday afternoon. The sweep marked the second in as many days for the Blue Demons who dropped just one set in their two BIG EAST victories this weekend and defeated Butler for the ninth-consecutive time.
The No. 2 doubles duo of Roberta Sechi and Eleanor Nobbs put together a stellar performance, dominating 6-0. Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith, the 67th-ranked pair in the nation, earned the doubles point with a 6-2 showing on court one. Smith recorded her 50th career doubles win in the process. Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula led 4-1, but their match went unfinished. DePaul has collected a doubles point in each victory this season.
In singles, Stula beat the Bulldogs' Norah Balhazor 6-2, 6-3 in slot two. Isabella Gibson swiftly won on court five, 6-3, 6-1. After starting the season 3-6, Gibson is unbeaten in her last four sets, claiming two victories. Sechi continued the doubles success in singles action with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in the sixth spot, clinching the match for the Scarlet and Blue. On court one, Smith held a 6-4 advantage after the first set. A back-and-forth battle with Butler's Chase Metcalf resulted in a 6-6 tie. A final tiebreaker decided the set, with Metcalf taking a commanding 6-3 lead. Smith roared back, winning five straight points to secure the tiebreaker, 8-6, adding the team's fifth point. Goncharov split the first two sets, 6-4, 2-6 in the fourth slot. Facing a final tiebreaking set, the Canadian won 10-3, notching her eighth triumph of the season. Nobbs finished the match for the Blue Demons, edging Katie Beavin 6-4, 6-4 on court three, capturing the 50th victory of her singles career.
