Pace, Iaccino lift Blue Demons to victory
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer picked up its first victory of the season on Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 defeat of Chicago State at Wish Field. The Blue Demons controlled possession and chances while using a two-goal first half to remain unbeaten on the 2025 campaign.
Junior forward Keagan Pace and sophomore forward Luca Iaccino each tallied their second goal of the season to put DePaul in the win column. Pace capitalized on a great counterattack in the early going and punched through in the ninth minute while Iaccino found the back of the net from the penalty spot in the 30th with what ended up being the game-winner.Â
DePaul (1-0-2) outshot the Cougars 21-4 on the match including a 6-2 advantage in shots on target.
The Blue Demons totaled 13 corner kick opportunities while limiting Chicago State (0-3) to zero.
How it Happened
DePaul was aggressive from the outset, firing the first shot of the match and earning the first corner kick opportunity.
The Blue Demons broke through for an early 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute with Ryan Thomas providing great service up the left side of the field for Pace to finish over the head of the Cougars keeper.
It wasn't long until Chicago State responded with a goal of their own in the 15th minute thanks to a ball into the middle of the box for Jack Geist to finish off a header past the arms of DePaul's santiago Davila.
DePaul reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute after Christian Baumgartner was brought down in the box by the Cougars' goalkeeper. Following VAR review, the Blue Demons were awarded a penalty for Iaccino to convert his second of the season.
After the penalty goal, the Blue Demons fired three more shots on target before the half but couldn't breakthrough.
At the intermission, DePaul held a 12-3 advantage in shots and 7-0 edge in corner kick opportunities.
The Blue Demons outshot the Cougars 9-1 in the second stanza, but only had one look on frame.
Chicago State's lone look at goal in the half came in the 88th minute.Â
