Blue Demons fall in final non-conference outing
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – DePaul women's soccer wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 2-0 setback at Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons (3-5-0) entered off a shutout win over Eastern Michigan but were unable to overcome the Broncos' attack in a match played on a very wet pitch at the WMU Soccer Complex, made slick by a strong sprinkler system and brief morning rain.
After starting the year with setbacks to top-seven opponents Notre Dame and Iowa, Western Michigan has turned up the intensity with four straight wins. The result marked the Broncos' second clean sheet of the season and second against a BIG EAST opponent, following a 1-0 victory over Creighton on Aug. 28.
How It Happened
DePaul created the game's first attempt just 12 seconds in, as Grace Menser put a low shot on target that WMU goalkeeper Reagan Sulaver handled. The Broncos responded with heavy pressure, earning multiple corners before Avery Peters broke through in the 13th minute on an unassisted strike for her first goal of the year.
The Blue Demons settled in but entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite a strong save by Mason Hillery on Drew Martin in the 35th minute. At the break, sophomore transfer Maddie Iro made her Blue Demon debut, coming on for Hillery in net.
After the switch, DePaul created its best looks. Sienna Gonzales went wide right with a header in the 48th minute and saw another chance blocked in the 56th.
Western Michigan doubled its lead in the 69th minute when Meredith Vance finished a feed from Martin, and moments later, Mia Veldman's curling attempt was denied by an acrobatic Sulaver save. Menser closed out the Blue Demons' push with an 87th-minute effort that drifted wide as WMU secured the win.
