DePaul Falls to Creighton 2-0 Saturday

CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer couldn't quite slow down Creighton on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-0 decision at Wish Field, as the Bluejays extended their win streak to five-straight matches. The Blue Demons fell to 2-3-5 on the season and 0-1-1 in BIG EAST matches while Creighton moved to 5-2-2 and 2-0 in league play.
After the Bluejays controlled the tempo in the first half and took an early advantage by way of a penalty kick, the Blue Demons returned to play in the second half with purpose, owning a majority of the possession and seeing plenty chances in the attacking third but coming up short.
Each side totaled 17 shots on the afternoon while the Bluejays held a 6-4 edge in shots on target. Noeh Hernandez and Jayden Waski led the Blue Demons with five and three shots, respectively.
Santiago Davila matched his season-high with four saves in his eighth appearance of the fall campaign.
How it Happened
The Blue Demons earned the first corner of the match in the fourth minute but couldn't capitalize while Creighton's high pressure produced a pair of shots in the 13th minute before Davila cleaned up the chances quickly.
In the 16th minute, the Bluejays converted on a penalty after a DePaul foul by the goal line and a VAR review stood to take a 1-0 lead.
After subbing on late in the first half, Daniel Hickiewicz's shot from 15 yards out was DePaul's best chance of the stanza, but it went just wide of the far post.
The Bluejays maintained a 1-0 lead at the half, holding an 8-5 edge in shots. The Blue Demons onwed a 5-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities through the first 45 minutes.
DePaul put up the first three shots of the second half with Hickiewicz, Ethan Gordon and Hernandez all testing the 'Jays goalkeeper in the early going.Â
Chasing down an equalizer, DePaul remained persistent in its press with Waski's header on a Hernandez cross hitting the post in the 79th minute.Â
DePaul kept banging down the Bluejays' door, but couldn't breakthrough after Sam Tinoco's volley at point-blank range sailed high in the 88th minute.Â
The Bluejays took advantage of a later counterattack and added an insurance goal in the 90th minute with Miguel Arilla finding Matthew Reed on the far side who finished past Davila to widen the lead to 2-0 with 10 seconds remaining. Â
