DePaul Drops Bout with Butler

CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer dropped a physical battle with Butler on Friday afternoon at Wish Field, 4-0. In a match that saw the two sides combine for seven cards and 24 fouls, the Bulldogs capitalized on their quality chances despite the Blue Demons leading in overall shots and corner kick opportunities.
The Blue Demons fell to 2-4-5 overall and 0-2-1 in BIG EAST action with the result while Butler improved to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
DePaul owned an 18-12 advantage in shots, but the Bulldogs held an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Blue Demons earned eight corner kicks while limiting Butler to two.Â
Junior midfielder Noeh Hernandez totaled a career-best eight shots on the outing including three on goal while four Blue Demons tallied two shots apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Clayton Brooks totaled a career-high four saves in his third outing in 2025.
How It Happened
DePaul earned the match's first corner kick in the sixth minute and picked up the pressure in the 11th minute with four shots in a minute's time.
Butler took a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute on the counterattack with service coming from the left side of the box for Josemir Gomez to tap it home on the doorstep of the goal.
The Blue Demons nearly connected in the 37th minute as Hernandez's free kick found the head of Ethan Gordon who hit the far post with his attempt.
DePaul held a 9-4 edge in shots at the half and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
It didn't take long for the Blue Demons to threaten in the second stanza with Christian Baumgartner firing a shot high just outside the six yard box in the first 30 seconds of play.
After drawing a foul in the box in the 58th minute, Hernandez was awarded a penalty kick, his third of the season, before it was turned away by the Butler goalkeeper.
Putting together a counter, the Bulldogs inched down the pitch before Luca Raso launched a ball top shelf from 16 yards out to make it a 2-0 advantage for the visitors.
After a scramble in the box, Jayden Waski was delivered a finish card for a high-kick, leaving the Blue Demons a man-down for the final 26 minutes of the match.
Butler capitalized on the advantage and claimed a 3-0 advantage in the 65th minute and later added a fourth tally on a breakaway chance in the 80th minute.
