Flames capitalize in 73rd minute for first win at Wish Field
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer dropped a 1-0 result to crosstown rival UIC on Thursday afternoon at Wish Field. The Flames (2-4-1) tallied their first goal in five all-time meetings with the Blue Demons (2-4-0), securing their first victory in the series. Despite holding 60 percent of possession and outshooting UIC 12-4, DePaul was unable to find an equalizer.
"It's a tough result, and we knew it could come down to a single moment; and that ended up being the case," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "I felt we were the stronger side between the boxes and did well to establish possession throughout the match. But ultimately, the difference comes down to finishing our chances and staying sharp on every defensive set piece. We'll continue to push to be more determined in front of goal and creative in the final third, because when we do that, the results will follow."
How It Happened
DePaul pressed early, with Sienna Gonzales testing UIC goalkeeper Sara Sanabria in the 12th minute and Grace Menser forcing another stop just seven minutes later. The Blue Demons kept the pressure on with five first-half shots, while UIC managed only one before the break.
After halftime, Jen Devona fired a shot on target in the 50th minute, but substitute keeper Francesca Faraci kept the Flames level. Nahla Dominguez nearly broke through on a laser strike in the 61st minute, again denied by Faraci.
UIC finally struck in the 73rd minute when Hannah Gryzik finished off a feed from Kaysey Castro for her first goal of the season. The Blue Demons pushed for an equalizer with late efforts from Gonzales, Dominguez, and Menser, but Faraci came up with four second-half saves to preserve the 1-0 result.
