66th minute PK goal secures DePaul’s second shutout of season
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer earned a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. Senior midfielder Nahla Dominguez converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute for her first career goal, which lifted DePaul (3-4-0) to its third win of the season. Goalkeeper Mason Hillery recorded three saves in the clean sheet, marking her second career shutout.
"It was a very physical, direct game from both sides, and I thought we handled it well with what was presented to us," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "We did what we needed to do to get a result, and I believe we deserved the win with the penalty kick. Now we'll regroup and get ready for a good Western Michigan team next week to close out our non-conference slate."
How It Happened
Both sides traded chances in the opening half, with Sienna Gonzales firing wide in the ninth minute before Jen Devona forced a save from Eagles goalkeeper Ella Holland less than a minute later. Holland stayed busy, denying Katelyn Jamie in the 31st minute and pushing aside a close-range effort from Tessa Fagerson in the 36th. At the other end, Hillery answered with stops on Sophia Baumann and Aniyah Mack, keeping the match scoreless at halftime.
DePaul went ahead in the 66th minute after Tessa Fagerson was taken down in the box, setting up a penalty kick that Dominguez calmly converted for her first career goal. Gonzales nearly added to the lead shortly after with a shot on target in the 70th minute, while Menser came close again in the 84th with an effort just wide.
Eastern Michigan applied pressure late, with shots from Maya Marolly, Meghan Heath, and Mary Grimes, but Hillery and the DePaul backline stood tall to secure the 1-0 victory and her second career shutout.
