Davorija posts career-high 13 points in setback
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball built a 19-point first-half lead but couldn't sustain its offensive efficiency, falling 69-59 to Providence at Wintrust Arena Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Demons caught fire from beyond the arc early, shooting 69 percent (9-for-13) from three-point range in the opening half, but went cold after the break as Providence outscored DePaul by 21 in the second half to erase the deficit.
Freshman guard Gina Davorija was the lone Blue Demon in double figures, leading the way with 13 points. Ally Timm and Kate Novik added nine points apiece to bolster the offense.
DePaul (3-14, 0-6 BIG EAST) held a narrow 35-33 rebounding edge for the second straight game.
Providence (9-7, 2-3 BIG EAST) placed four players in double figures, led by Sabou Gueye's game-high 15 points.
How It Happened
DePaul opened the contest on an 8-2 run behind a pair of early buckets from Davorija, forcing an early Providence timeout. The Blue Demons held the Friars scoreless for more than three minutes, extending the lead to 19-6.
West's triple from the wing marked DePaul's seventh three-pointer of the first half and pushed the advantage to 33-14. Providence responded with a 9-0 run to trim the margin to 10 before Timm's second three of the afternoon halted the surge. The Friars closed the half connecting on six of their final eight attempts to cut the deficit to 43-32 at the break.
Providence opened the second half aggressively, going 7-for-9 from the free-throw line in the first five minutes to pull within 47-41. DePaul was held scoreless for a three-minute stretch before Novik's drive to the basket gave the Blue Demons a 51-49 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
The Friars took their first lead of the game at the 5:15 mark of the fourth as DePaul connected on just one of its first eight attempts in the period. Providence went on to close out the contest on a 7-0 run to secure its first win in Chicago in the all-time series.
