Pace, Hernandez power Blue Demons to three points
STORRS, Conn. – Keagan Pace and Noeh Hernandez found the back of the net as DePaul picked up its first road win of the season, a 2-1 victory over UConn Saturday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
Hernandez had a hand in both goals, assisting on Pace's opener before adding one of his own, and became just the sixth Blue Demon to reach 60 career points. Chance Johnson made five saves in net to earn his second win of the season.
The Blue Demons improve to 3-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play, while UConn falls to 5-6-2 and 1-2-0.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons pressured early, firing the game's first shot and even finding the back of the net before the goal was waved off on an offside call.
Johnson kept the game level with stops in the ninth and 18th minutes.
DePaul earned its first corner of the night in the 21st minute and converted moments later, as Hernandez served a ball to the near post for Pace to head home in the 22nd minute and put the visitors in front 1-0.
The Blue Demons held an 8-5 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks at the break.
The sides traded chances out of the locker room before Hernandez added an insurance goal in the 60th minute. Building out of the back, Jordan Clagette won possession in DePaul's defensive third and played the ball upfield for Daniel Hickiewicz, who drove into space and laid it off for Hernandez. The senior danced through the box and finished far post to make it 2-0.
UConn answered three minutes later. After a DePaul foul in the Huskies' end, a long free kick found its way through for Grant Emerhi to pull UConn within 2-1 in the 63rd minute.
DePaul held on from there. Johnson denied Evan Pickering in the 80th minute, and Hickiewicz forced back-to-back saves from Kyle Durham in the 81st and 82nd minutes. The Blue Demons finished with an 18-16 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
