Westphal notches first collegiate double in setback
Tampa, Fla. – DePaul softball dropped an 11-0, five-inning decision to Kansas Saturday morning on day two of the Fonseca Memorial Tournament, hosted by South Florida. The Jayhawks tallied 10 hits, including three extra-base knocks, and drew seven walks in the win.
Lexi Houge, Jolie Adams, Emersyn Coulter and Kailie Westphal each recorded a hit for DePaul, with Westphal collecting the first double of her collegiate career.
DePaul (6-3) used four pitchers in the circle on the outing. Sophomore right-hander Hannah Messer (3-3) took the loss after allowing four runs in 1.2 innings of work.
How It Happened
Kansas (6-4) struck early, scoring in the first on a leadoff walk that came around on a single before a three-run home run in the second pushed the lead to 4-0. The Jayhawks broke the game open in the fourth, stringing together six hits, including a two-RBI triple and a two-run homer, to extend the advantage to 8-0 before adding three more runs in the fifth.
DePaul had traffic throughout, with its leadoff batter reaching base in three of the first four innings. Zoe Levine and Lydia Ettema each drew walks at the top of frames, while Westphal's two-out double in the fifth and a single from Adams gave the Blue Demons late momentum, but Kansas recorded the final out to secure the run-rule victory.
Up Next
The Blue Demons close out their time in the Sunshine State with two games Sunday against Yale and South Florida. First pitch versus the Bulldogs is set for 8 a.m. CT with game two against the Bulls following immediately after.
