Blue Demons Rally to Take Victory Over Northwestern State at Jax State Tournament

Wondaal’s 2-run blast caps the Blue Demon comeback
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — DePaul softball rallied for a comeback victory against Northwestern State on Sunday morning, taking the game 5-3 to close out their weekend at the Jax State Tournament.
The Blue Demons recorded a balanced offensive effort, with seven players collecting at least one hit. Five of DePaul's eight hits were for extra bases, highlighted by a home run from Maya Wondaal, the first of her collegiate career. Wondaal also notched her first two hits of the season with a single and the homer. Junior Morgan Rogers recorded her first double of the season as well as her first RBI.
In the circle, Kelly Greene earned the start, tossing 0.2 innings before Hannah Messer entered and handled the remaining 6.1 innings, allowing no runs and securing the win to pick up her fourth win of the season.
How It Happened
Northwestern State (5-11) struck first in a two-out rally in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. DePaul (8-8) responded in the bottom of the frame as Morgan Rogers hit a double and was driven home by an RBI single from Addy Poe, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Blue Demons continued chipping away in the third inning. Maya Wondaal singled and Jolie Adams doubled to put runners in scoring position, and Rogers brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-2.
DePaul's offense broke through in the fourth inning. Brooke Cwick led off with a single before Kailie Westphal doubled to tie the game at 3-3. Wondaal followed with a two-run home run to give the Blue Demons a 5-3 lead, which held for the remainder of the game.
UP NEXT
The Blue Demons will remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Florida Feb. 27–29 for the Jacksonville Tournament, where they are slated for five games against host Jacksonville and North Florida.
