Blue Demons Fall to Butler 71-64

Ojo, Newman pace Blue Demons on Senior Day
CHICAGO – Despite placing four players in double figures for the sixth time this season, DePaul fell to Butler, 71-64, Wednesday evening at Wintrust Arena. The Bulldogs used a decisive third quarter, outscoring the Blue Demons 20-9, and shot 51 percent from the field to complete the regular-season sweep.
Graduate forward Michelle Ojo led DePaul with 13 points, marking her 11th double-figure performance of the season, while adding five rebounds and two assists. Meg Newman followed with 12 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting, along with five rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore Natiah Nelson contributed 11 points for her 13th game in double figures this season, and Devin Hagemann added 10 to round out the quartet of Blue Demons in double figures.
DePaul (7-23, 4-15 BIG EAST) assisted on 18 of its 24 made field goals, a 75 percent clip. The Blue Demons have recorded 18 or more assists in 14 games this season.
Butler (11-18, 5-14 BIG EAST) had three players score in double figures, led by Anna Wypych's game-high 21 points. Saniya Jackson added 19 points and 14 rebounds.
How It Happened
Newman set the tone on Senior Day, scoring eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 start before the first media timeout. Both teams shot 50 percent or better in the opening quarter, with Butler holding a 19-17 edge after one.
DePaul seized momentum in the second quarter, holding Butler to just two points over the first five minutes to take a 25-23 lead. Aly Timm's first three-pointer of the night pushed the Blue Demons to their largest advantage of the half, and DePaul carried a 34-30 lead into the break behind 55.6 percent shooting.
Hagemann opened the third quarter with a triple to extend the lead to seven, but Butler responded with a 20-6 run, shooting 70 percent in the frame. DePaul was held to nine points in the quarter and trailed 50-43 entering the fourth.
After surrendering an early three-pointer in the final period, the Blue Demons forced five turnovers and rattled off 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 53-53 behind a full-court press. Hagemann briefly gave DePaul a one-point edge, but Butler answered with a 14-4 run down the stretch to secure the 71-64 victory.
