Women’s tennis remains unbeaten in BIG EAST action

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – DePaul women's tennis claimed a 5-2 victory over the 6-3 UConn Huskies Saturday afternoon at IRC East in Indianapolis. The result moves the Blue Demons to 6-6 on the year, snapping a three-match skid, while maintaining an unblemished 3-0 record in BIG EAST play.

DePaul jumped out to an early doubles lead through the tandem of Clara Nilsson and Hannah Smith, who claimed a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 court. The duo of Helin Alvarez and Roberta Sechi followed suit, capturing a 6-1 result of their own to secure the doubles point for the Blue Demons.

Entering singles play with the advantage, DePaul continued its momentum, winning five of six first sets. The first result of the day, however, went to UConn, as Nilsson fell 3-6, 1-6 at No. 4 singles. Rebounding for the Blue Demons was No. 1 stalwart Sasha Stula, who responded with a convincing straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-2.

After DePaul regained the match advantage at 2-1, the lead was not relinquished for the remainder of the afternoon. In quick succession following Stula's victory, Sechi captured a 6-2, 7-5 win on court No. 5, moving DePaul within one point of clinching the match.

After another Blue Demon loss narrowed the score to 3-2, Alvarez came up clutch, prevailing in a gritty showdown, 7-5, 6-4 on court No. 6 to seal the team victory. Freshman Yasemin Pehlivan added an extra point with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 three-set marathon.
