How It Happened
Villanova (4–18, 2–0 BIG EAST) pushed two runs across in the top of the first to take an early advantage. In the bottom of the frame, Alexis Houge got the Blue Demons on base with a leadoff walk, and Parker plated the run with a base hit up the middle to cut the deficit to 2–1. A base hit from Adams and a pinch-hit walk from Kailie Westphal loaded the bases for DePaul with two outs. Messer registered an RBI single to even the score 2–2, but a play at the plate ended the inning.
DePaul (9–14, 0–2 BIG EAST) took a 3–2 lead in the second off a Rogers RBI base hit. The Wildcats answered back with a solo shot to center in the top of the third, tying the game at 3–3
Lydia Ettema, Adams, and Emersyn Coulter hit three consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third. A pinch-hit fielder's choice from Brooke Cwick plated a run to retake the lead 4–3 before Poe delivered a pinch-hit RBI base hit to extend the lead 5–3.
Both teams went down quietly in the fourth before the Wildcats opened the fifth with their second home run of the afternoon to make it 5–4. Greene came in to relieve Messer with no outs before striking out three in a row to leave the tying run stranded on third to bring DePaul back to the plate.
Greene followed up her performance on the mound with a base hit in the bottom of the fifth, but DePaul could not get her across to score, ending the fifth inning at 5–4.
