DePaul draws Pirates 0-0 in BIG EAST opener

CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer opened BIG EAST play with a 0-0 draw against Seton Hall on Sept. 26, earning its fourth shutout of the season. The Blue Demons moved to a 3-2-4 record with the result.

How It Happened
The opening 12 minutes of the match passed without any offensive action before freshman forward Katelyn Haiser took the first of DePaul's eight total shot attempts. Seton Hall wouldn't counter with a shot of its own until the 20th minute.

DePaul's offense found chances in the attacking third nine minutes later, racking up consecutive corner kick opportunities. The first resulted in a wide shot from junior midfielder Mia Veldman while the second was cleared by the Seton Hall defense.

The 0-0 deadlock stayed intact into halftime, as neither goalkeeper made a save over the first 45 minutes and each team notched three shots.

Fouls, on the other hand, occurred often in the first half. Seton Hall racked up eight and DePaul posted six.

"It was a really physical game that didn't have a lot of flow and rhythm because we would connect on a couple of passes and then there would be a foul or the ball was kicked out of bounds," head coach Michele O'Brien said. "I think it was hard to establish clear possession and sustain good attacking play due to the nature of the style of the game."

The Blue Demons opened the second half with two shots on goal — first from junior defender Dory Latenser in the 50th minute, and then Veldman in the 52nd — but Pirates goalkeeper Katherine Kleinsmith collected both.

Inconsistent possessions and scant chances in the offensive third continued into the final 10 minutes of the match. DePaul goalkeeper Mason Hillery didn't record a save until the 86th minute, thwarting a late Seton Hall scoring chance.

DePaul's offense had the final say offensively, as Haiser generated a shot in the 87th minute before the team recorded another corner kick chance. Neither attacking look met its mark.

"We managed to create some decent chances to maybe get a goal on some dangerous set pieces, but while I think there was a lot of action, there was also a lot of disruption," O'Brien said.

Settling on a 0-0 result, the Blue Demons held the undefeated Seton Hall Pirates scoreless. The team reached an 8-6 shot advantage and recorded its fourth clean sheet of the 2026 campaign.

"We got a point, we got a shutout and I think every time you can get something out of a game it's valuable moving forward," O'Brien said. "In BIG EAST play, anyone could win on any given day, so we will take it one game at a time and prepare ourselves for Xavier and look to come back with some points."
