Blue Demons Face East Carolina
10/12/2001 12:00:00 AM | MEN'S SOCCER
CHICAGO - The DePaul men's soccer team host Conference USA newcomer East Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. DePaul enters the match at 0-2-2 in league play while the Pirates are 2-3-0.
Noting the Blue Demons
Despite not having won a league match, a victory on Saturday could move the Blue Demons into the picture for the Conference USA Tournament in mid-November. The top six teams travel to Tampa, Fla. for the four-day tourney. DePaul’s overall record is 0-7-2 following last weekend’s 1-1 tie at Cincinnati.
Senior forward Chris Greer leads DePaul with eight points on four goals. His four scores this season have moved him into fifth all-time in DePaul history with 25 career goals. Ed Kiefer has a goal this season in addition to a pair of assists. Robert Marshall and Dimitri Rousseau each have a goal and an assist. In goal, Jash Chavero needs just two more games to become DePaul's all-time leader in games played by a goalkeeper.
Checking Out the Pirates
C-USA newcomer East Carolina enters Saturday’s match at 5-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in league action. The Pirates knocked off Marquette, 1-0, on Thursday night in Milwaukee. This is the first matchup between the Blue Demons and Pirates.
Last Time Out – Cincinnati 1, DePaul 1
Despite being outshot, 17-5, the DePaul men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday afternoon. Denny Meheghan's goal at 56:57 evened the score at 1-1, but neither team could find the net for the rest of regulation and two overtime periods. DePaul is now 0-7-2 overall and 0-2-2 in Conference USA play.
Cincinnati's Matt Hayden scored with 50 seconds left in the first half on an assist from John Liersemann. Meheghan tied the game in the 57th minute as he beat Cincinnati goalkeeper Sacha Nathu for the unassisted score.
DePaul's Jeff Klitzke tallied seven saves while playing all 120 minutes. DePaul was outshot, 17-5, and the Bearcats also had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Rearranging the Schedule
With the recent national events, a number of changes have occurred on the 2001 DePaul soccer schedule. DePaul filled in the two cancelled games at the Leatherneck Kelme Classic with Northern Illinois on Sept. 18 and Western Illinois on Sept. 29.
The match originally scheduled for Sept. 18 at TCU has been moved to Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. The kickoff for the Oct. 20 contest against UAB is now at noon, and the start of Nov. 4 match against Charlotte has been moved up to 1 p.m.
Looking Ahead
On Wednesday, Oct. 17, DePaul will travel up Lakeshore Drive to face the Loyola Ramblers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Loyola Soccer Park. Next weekend, DePaul hosts UAB for a match at noon.
