GREEN BAY, Wis. – A pair of first-half goals by Patrick Vyncke lifted the DePaul men’s soccer team over UW-Green Bay, 2-0, on Wednesday night at Phoenix Field. With the win the Blue Demons improved to 6-7-0 overall and won for the fifth time in the last six matches.
DePaul struck early as Vyncke found the ball after a scrum in front of Phoenix goalkeeper Pat Czuprynski. Vyncke gathered the ball and put it to the back of the net for his first goal of the season at 5:26. Jonathan Foley set up the play on a free kick and found Claudio Ferre down the right side. Ferre sent the ball into the box and Vyncke was able to send it home. Foley and Ferre were each credited with an assist on the score.
Vyncke completed the first multi-goal game of his career in the 27th minute on a header off a free kick. Bob Kruse set up the goal with a great serve in front of the goal. Vyncke went up and over the Phoenix defense to score and give the Blue Demons the 2-0 advantage. Czuprynski got a hand on the ball, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the score.
With a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, Adam Hermsen nearly sealed the game, but his shot hit the post after he broke through the UW-Green Bay defense. The Phoenix didn’t quit as they put up a flurry of shots late in the match, but DePaul keeper Michael Timlin and the DePaul defense held on for the shutout. Timlin finished the match with four saves while registering his second straight shutout.
Over their last six matches, DePaul has allowed just one goal while posting five shutouts. The lone loss in the six games was to No. 5 Saint Louis by a 1-0 score last Wednesday.
DePaul improves to 6-7-0 and returns to Conference USA action this weekend. The Blue Demons host the Charlotte 49ers at Wish Field on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
