MADISON, Wis. – A pair of goals by Jed Hohlbein led the Wisconsin Badgers over the DePaul Blue Demons, 2-1, Wednesday night in Madison. The loss for DePaul snapped a three-match winning streak in their final non-conference game of the regular season.
The Badgers got on the board first at 25:48 when Hohlbein found the net off a free kick serve from Aaron Witchger. The score by Wisconsin was the first goal the Blue Demons had allowed in three matches.
DePaul answered with a goal 58 seconds when Edwin Arreola took a pass Kevin Riemer that split the Badger defense. Arreola gathered the ball and scored for the fifth time this season at 26:46 to knot the match at 1-1. The score remained that way through the end of the first half.
The entire match was a defensive battle as the Blue Demons were able to get off just six shots compared to 10 for the home team. Hohlbein struck again, this time with the eventual game-winner, in the 53rd minute. Alec Neal set up the play with a pass to Hamid Afsari, who fed Hohlbein for a shot just inside the penalty box.
Blue Demon goalkeeper Jeff Klitzke finished the match with four saves while Eric Hanson of Wisconsin was forced to make a pair of stops. Arreola was the only DePaul player with two shots in the match.
DePaul finishes the regular with four consecutive Conference USA matches. The Blue Demons can control their own destiny in their bid for a C-USA Tournament berth beginning on Saturday against UAB. The Blue Demons and Blazers kick off at 1 p.m. with UAB trailing DePaul by just one point in the league standings.
