TAMPA, Fla. – The DePaul men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at USF on Sunday afternoon ending their season. A win would have moved the Blue Demons into next week’s Conference USA Tournament, but a pair of goals in the span of 10 minutes of the second half was too much. The Blue Demons end the season an 8-11-0 overall and 4-5-0 in C-USA play while the Bulls improve to 7-7-3 and 4-3-3 with the league tournament ahead of them.
Following a scoreless first half, Patrick Vyncke put the Blue Demons on the board with his third goal of the season. His shot hit the crossbar and then bounced into the net past USF keeper Dane Brenner at 55:13.
The Bulls immediately answered the DePaul goal and knotted the match at 58:07. Drew Helm found the net off a free kick at the top of the penalty box. His shot beat DePaul keeper Michael Timlin to even the score a 1-1.
Just over 10 minutes later, the DePaul defense was called for a foul in the penalty box. Keeron Benito lined up the penalty kick and scored the eventual game-winner at 68:24 with a shot to the upper center of the net.
Despite outshooting the home team, 19-16, the Blue Demons were unlucky with just a single goal. Brenner made nine saves for USF while Timlin finished the afternoon with six stops. DePaul managed seven corner kicks compared to four for USF.
The Blue Demons finish the season with their second consecutive eight-win season. The 16 victories over the last two years is the most in back-to-back seasons since the program won 19 combined matches in 1994 and 1995.
