Box Score
John Kornfeld found Hermsen in the 20th minute to put the Blue Demons on top in the first half. Kornfeld set up the play on the right sideline and crossed a pass to the left side of the box from 45 yards out. Hermsen took the pass in stride and fired a shot into the right corner of the net past UIC keeper Jeff Engelbrecht for his fourth goal of the season.
With just under 15 minutes left in the first half, UIC’s Toni Skroce looked for the equalizer as he got behind the DePaul defense, but Brian Visser was there to make the fingertip save and foil the opportunity.
On the Flames’ next possession, Cesar Zambrano set up Skroce for the same opportunity and this time Skroce beat Visser to tie the match at 31:34. The scored was Skroce’s sixth of the season.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Flames scored what appeared to be the go-ahead goal, but an offensive player was whistled for being offside and the goal was called off.
In the 65th minute, Brody Simkins found himself behind the DePaul defense with only Visser between him and the net. Visser came out from the goal line and Simkins’ shot went wide of the left post.
DePaul set up an opportunity 10 minutes later as Anthony Minniti found Kornfeld open on the right side of box. However, Engelbrecht was there to make the stop and preserve the 1-1 tie. Engelbrecht finished the match with four saves while Visser made five stops.
Following a UIC foul in the 82nd minute, Anthony Minniti nearly gave the Blue Demons their second lead of the match, but his free kick attempt hit the upper right elbow of the goal and deflected out of bounds.
Neither team could find the net over the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period. In the 104th minute, the Blue Demon defense was looking to clear the ball as Ligas secured it just outside the corner of the penalty box. He lined up the shot and threaded it through the DePaul defense and past Visser at 103:19 for the game-winner.
The Flames outshot the Blue Demons, 16-10, but DePaul held a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks. Three of the last four meetings between the two programs have gone to overtime. A year ago, the Flames took a 2-1 decision in overtime following a 1-0 victory for DePaul in 2003. The 2002 match ended in a 2-2 draw.
