CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team remained unbeaten for the third straight game in a spirited match on Sunday afternoon against Drake. Jeff DeGroot and Adam Hermsen scored second-half goals to lead the Blue Demons to the 2-0 victory.
Both teams played even in the first half with Drake's best opportunity coming with 11 minutes left as Ryan Samuelson's one-time went just over the crossbar off a pass from the right side. Four minutes later, John Partyka’s header was saved by Drake goalkeeper Philip Breuer for the Blue Demons’ best opportunity of the first period.
DePaul (2-1-1) broke through at 62:02 when Julian Chill lofted a cross into the box from the right side that DeGroot headed home past Breuer. For DeGroot, it was his first goal of the season and first of his career.
Drake (0-3-1) scored what appeared to be the game-tying goal with just over 23 minutes left, but it was ruled that the ball was thrown in without being touched by anyone and was called off.
The second goal of the match for the Blue Demons came at 83:23 when Breuer misplayed the ball and Hermsen gathered it and knocked it in for his first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Blue Demons, 12-10, while each team took five corner kicks. DePaul goalkeeper Brian Visser collected five saves and earned his second shutout of the season while Breuer finished the match with four saves.
DePaul has gone 2-0-1 since dropping the season-opener at Bradley on Sept. 2. During the three-game stretch, the Blue Demons have defeated Western Illinois and Drake while tying Saint Francis (Pa.).
Next weekend, the DePaul soccer programs welcome back former student-athletes for Alumni Weekend. The men take on Georgetown in their first BIG EAST match on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. On Saturday, both team will host alumni games and Sunday is scheduled for a doubleheader. The men's team takes on Seton Hall at 12:30 followed by the DePaul women against Central Michigan at 2:30 p.m. Prior to the start of the men's game on Sunday, DePaul will hold a ceremony to rededicate Wish Field.
