CHICAGO - The DePaul men’s soccer team played No. 17 Seton Hall to a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, but the Blue Demons scored twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation to send the match to overtime.
Just over three minutes into the match, an apparent Seton Hall goal was called for an offsides. Six minutes later, the visitors found the net as Teddy Niziolek took a pass from Sacha Kljestan and fired it home at 10:24 for a 1-0 lead.
In the 28th minute, Justin McGrath’s bid for a 2-0 lead hit the crossbar and was cleared by the DePaul defense. Seton Hall (4-1-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) outshot the Blue Demons, 7-2, in first half.
John Partyka fired a shot from the top of the box for DePaul’s first shot of the game in the 21st minute as the Blue Demon offense started to warm up. Alec Kulinczenko nearly capitalized on two opportunities with just under 10 minutes left, but the Seton Hall defense was there both times to clear the ball. The Blue Demons had chances in the first period as they took four corner kicks compared to zero for the Pirates.
Seton Hall got going quickly after the intermission as David Roman and John Raus hit the crossbar on consecutive shots in the 52nd minute.
DePaul (2-2-2, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) responded and continued to put the pressure on, but Seton Hall keeper Ian Joyce was there each time. Joyce finished the match with nine saves.
The second-half scoring started in the 70th minute when the Blue Demons were whistled for a foul in the penalty box. Kljestan converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season and pushed the Pirate lead to 2-0.
Five minutes later the tables turned as a Pirate defender was called for a hand ball in the box. Anthony Minniti lined up the penalty kick and sent it home at 74:13 to get the Blue Demons on the board. For Minniti, it was his first goal of the season.
With time winding down, it was dj vu all over again as Adam Hermsen tied the match in the same fashion as on Friday. Against Georgetown, he took a pass from Julian Chille and forced overtime with a header as there were only six minutes left in regulation. Sunday afternoon saw the senior forward connect on a cross into the box from John Kornfeld to tie the match at 2-2 with just under five minutes on the clock. The score was Hermsen’s team-high third goal of the season.
Neither team could find the net in overtime as Seton Hall took six shots compared to four for DePaul. Both teams best chances came in the first overtime period as Gordon Kljestan hit the crossbar for Seton Hall and Hermsen’s shot past a diving Joyce was just wide of the right post. Luke Rojo’s header in the second extra frame nearly got by Joyce, but the keeper was able to knock the shot away and force a corner kick.
The Pirates outshot DePaul, 24-18, in the match with the Blue Demons holding a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. DePaul goalkeeper Brian Visser registered a career-high seven saves in 120 minutes.
DePaul plays three straight road matches before returning to Wish Field on Oct. 1 against Syracuse. Next weekend, the Blue Demons travel to Pittsburgh and West Virginia and take on local foe Loyola-Chicago on Wed., Sept 28 in Rogers Park.
