Men's Soccer Drops Match at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The DePaul men’s soccer team closed the 2006 regular season with a 1-0 loss at Syracuse on Saturday night. DePaul opens the 2006 BIG EAST Championship with a first-round match at Notre Dame on Wednesday. The Blue Demons enter the league tourney as the No. 6 seed from the Red Division while the Fighting Irish are the Blue Division’s No. 3 seed.
Syracuse (7-8-1, 2-8-1 BIG EAST) scored the only goal of the match 10 minutes into the second half. Hansen Woodruff tallied his seventh goal of the season as he knocked in a rebound. Kyle Hall set up the score with his shot that Woodruff collected the sent it to the back of the net at 55:32.
The Blue Demons took 17 shots and 11 corner kicks in the game, but failed to score a goal. Syracuse finished the night with 15 shots and five corner kicks, all in the second half.
DePaul (5-11-2, 4-7-0 BIG EAST) totaled nine shots on goal forcing Orange goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia to make nine saves. Brian Visser finished the match with five saves while allowing the single goal.
The Blue Demons travel to Notre Dame for the first round of the 2006 BIG EAST Championship. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET in South Bend, Ind.
DePaul dropped the regular-season contest to the Fighting Irish, 3-0, on Sept. 10 in South Bend. Notre Dame enters the tournament at 12-4-2 overall and 8-3-0 in BIG EAST play. The complete BIG EAST Championship bracket and match times will be announced by the conference office.
The conference tournament appearance is the first for the Blue Demons since a 1-0 loss to Louisville as the No. 9 seed in the 1998 Conference USA Tournament play-in game.
Match Notes: The shutout was the second straight and ninth of the season suffered by DePaul… the 11 corner kicks were a season high… the 17 shots were the third-highest total this season… the series between the two programs is now tied at 1-1-0.
