NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The DePaul men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Notre Dame in the first round of the 2006 BIG EAST Championship. The Fighting Irish scored a goal in each half while outshooting the Blue Demons, 17-10.
The first half played even until Notre Dame (13-4-2) found the net with just under five minutes left until intermission. Kurt Martin set up the play with a pass to Joseph Lapira. Lapira took Martin’s pass and fired a shot at DePaul keeper Brian Visser, who made the save. However, Lapira took advantage of the rebound off Visser’s stop and scored at 40:28 for his NCAA-leading 20th goal of the season.
Ten minutes into the second half, Lapira set up Nate Norman to give the Irish a decisive 2-0 advantage. Lapria sent a cross in front of the net where Norman knocked it home from seven yards at 55:23.
DePaul (5-12-2) finished the match with 10 shots forcing Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Cahill to make four saves. Visser finished the night with six saves while the Irish accumulated 17 shots. Both teams took two corner kicks in the 90 minutes of action.
“We are happy with the way we made progress this season and this team established a great foundation for the future,” said Blazer. “Qualifying for this year’s BIG EAST Tournament bodes well for the future of the program.”
